Tattoo Studio Essex: Our Top 5 Tattoo FAQs

At Inception Ink Tattoo Studio Essex, we had a recent message from a prospective client with a list of questions for us, regarding a potential tattoo. They were worried they were going to put us off before we’d started. They needn’t have had anything to worry about!

In our opinion, any question is worth asking, especially when it comes to your tattoo. It’s important to go into your tattoo setting well informed and confident about the work you’re having done! Afterall, your ink will be with you for life. In light of the queries we often get, it’s prompted us to focus this week’s edition on just some of our top tattoo FAQs!

1. Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt?

This is probably one of our most frequently asked questions from people about to receive their first tattoo. Pain is relative and we all have different pain thresholds. What is extremely intense for one person, may feel like a mild scratch to someone else. How much a tattoo hurts also depends on the type of tattoo you’re getting, combined with where you’re getting it done. Usually, getting a tattoo causes mild discomfort.

2. Can I Take Painkillers Beforehand?

Yes. If you’re worried about your pain threshold, our Essex tattoo artists would advise taking the recommended dose of oral paracetamol or ibuprofen tablet before the procedure. Do not apply any pain relieving creams or gel to the area you’re having tattooed before you come in. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication.

3. What If I Get Upset?

You wouldn’t be the first! At our tattoo studio Essex, we understand that everyone reacts to the process of getting a tattoo differently. Given the pain threshold logic discussed above, sometimes people are surprised when their tattoo is a little more uncomfortable than expected. If you’re being tattooed for a long period of time, the discomfort can sometimes feel overwhelming and emotional release is completely normal.

Additionally, for others, getting a tattoo is an emotional experience and I some cases, it’s completely normal for people to become upset or overwhelmed for personal reasons during the process. At Inception Ink, we’re on hand to ensure you have the best possible tattoo experience. If there is anything we can do to take this further, let us know!

4. Where Is the Most Painful Place to Get Tattooed?

There are a few places that are commonly more painful to get inked than others. This usually comes down to the thickness of the skin and the amount of nerve endings in the area. However, we are all different. Some of the most painful areas are:

Chest
Groin
Rib cage
Elbows
Neck

The least painful area is usually the outer thigh. For more information on this, check out our other page, here.

5. How Do I Stop My Tattoo Fading?

A tattoo doesn’t actually go very deep. Ink is deposited into the top layer of skin, known as the dermis. Gradually, your cells absorb the ink and disperse it very slowly. This natural process, alongside environmental factors accelerate the aging your skin and the fading of your ink.

Our tattoo studio Essex have listed some simple preventatives to slow tattoo fading below:

Take care of your tattoo after it’s just been done. Don’t scratch or itch it. Clean it when appropriate. Your tattoo artist will be able to advise on how to take care of your new tattoo best.

Keep your new ink out of the sun.

Wear loose clothing whilst its healing.

Keep yourself hydrated for healthy skin.

Once fully healed, moisturise your skin to prevent dryness.
