Essex Tattoo Artists Discuss the Least Painful Places to Get A Tattoo

When considering getting a tattoo one of the main concerns people have is if it will hurt. Our Essex tattoo artists will always advise that the level of discomfort is unique for everyone, because we all have different pain thresholds. However, there are a few places on the body that are less painful than others. In this week’s blog, we’re taking a closer look at the places that are least painful and why.

Seek Expert Advice

If you don’t mind where on your body you get inked, we’d recommend popping in and talking to your Essex tattoo artists. The design you’d like may only fit on specific areas of your body, so it’s best to have a chat regarding pain threshold and your overall design first. At Inception Ink, our consultations are free, so come in, have a chat and find out exactly what you need to know before committing.
Afterall, a tattoo will stay with you for the rest of your life, so consider your ink, it’s location and your artist carefully.

The Pain Scale

Pain is subjective – no two thresholds are ever the same. Where you get tattooed can also play a part in this. It’s important to mention, that some parts of the body may feel slightly more sensitive depending on your gender. There are areas of the body that would naturally feel more sensitive for a woman than for a man, and vice versa.

To give you an idea, we’ve come up with a basic guide to give an overview of the most and lesser painful areas on the body.

Most Painful: Ribcage, breasts, chest, armpits, shins, ankles, spine, neck, lips.

Moderately Painful: Hips, knees, elbows, head, ears, hands, stomach, back, outer thighs, outer shoulder, biceps, calves, wrists, feet.

Least Painful Areas for Women

With the above information in mind, the least painful areas for women are:

  • Calves – The fleshy part of your lower leg is a good place for your first tattoo. There aren’t lots of nerve endings or bone here.

  • Outer Arm – Anywhere on your outer arm is a great place for a more comfortable tattoo experience. Usually, this part of the arm is fleshier and more muscular.

  • Outer Thigh – The outer top of your thigh is a great surface area for a bigger tattoo. There are few nerve endings, so it’s less painful.

Least Painful Areas for Men

For men, our Essex tattoo artists would suggest:

  • Outer Thigh – The same logic applies here for men as it does women. We’d just recommend shaving thicker leg hair first!

  • Outer Shoulder/Deltoid Area – This part of the shoulder is a low pain area. It’s perfect for a slightly larger piece too!

  • Outer Arm – Again, your arm is a great spot for a more comfortable tattoo experience. Should you want to build up a sleeve over the course of a few months, you can easily do this here too.

The Most Painful Areas

Generally speaking, the breast, chest, neck, stomach and inner bicep tend to be the most uncomfortable for women and the back and groin can be more painful for men. This does depend on the kind of tattoo you’re having done though.

Ensure you’re hydrated and well rested before coming in to help ease any discomfort further. For more information on key things to consider that can help you manage any pain, check out our advice here.
