Your tattoo artist can help to create a bespoke design for you and ensure that it is tattooed to the highest standard, but they are not translators themselves. Always seek the help of a professional translator before you get your tattoo. Afterall, once your piece is complete, it’s there for life. Our advice would be to get it right first time.
Can I Use Google Translate?
Google translate is accessible for everyone and can be helpful in some instances. You will be able to get an initial idea of what your script sizing will look like and this can help your tattoo artist to place the font in the very early stages of the tattoo creation.
However, Google isn’t always 100% accurate when it comes to the actual translation. A human, native speaker will be able to ensure that your tattoo is grammatically correct, but also that it conveys the right sentiment and emotion. They’ll be able to depict specific cultural nuances and characteristics within the language that Google Translate simply cannot.

What Do I Do If My Tattoo Has Been Translated Wrong?

So, you’ll more than likely have to go with a new cover-up design, unless it’s a case of adding a word to the start or end of the script. We thought we’d highlight some of the famous tattoos that have been, well, lost in translation, so you can learn from their mistakes!
Rihanna’s tattoo stating ‘Rebelle Fleur’ went viral after eagle-eyed French fans quickly pointed out that it should have read ‘Fleur Rebelle’, meaning ‘rebellious flower’, rather than ‘rebel flower’.
Britney Spears asked for a tattoo of the symbol that represents ‘mysterious’ in Chinese. However, when interpreted, her tattoo actually meant ‘you are strange’!
Ariana Grande wanted to celebrate the release of her single ‘7 Rings’, so got a Japanese tattoo to commemorate the occasion. However, instead of receiving the Japanese symbols for ‘7 Rings’, they were inked incorrectly, and actually read ‘shichirin’ – which means small barbeque grill! She addressed this wrong translation on Instagram shortly after.
